Welcome to The Canine Chasm!

Not your typical dog blog, The Canine Chasm seeks to bridge gap between the Pet World and the Dog World. I created this blog to help people navigate this wonderful, beautiful, crazy Dog World. I know how it feels to be on both sides. Wonderful things can happen when we work together.

So, first things first: What is the Pet World?

The Pet World is primarily comprised of pet owners that don’t compete with their dogs. They just want a healthy pet for their family, usually with no special goals in mind except to love and cherish their dogs to the best of their ability.

On that note, what is the Dog World?

The Dog World is the vast world of dog sports and preservation breeders. These folks put their blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of money into their breeds. And they do it for the love of dogs. The thing is, these Worlds sometimes feel separated by an ocean of misunderstanding, misinformation, pride, and even stubbornness. I believe the solution is to meet both Worlds where they are by sharing knowledge, opening eyes and hearts, letting go of pride and embracing empathy.

If you are looking for a responsibly bred puppy, check out my Reputable Breeders series. Start here with my article on Recognizing Ethical Breeders. You also don’t want to miss Decoding OFA: a guide to interpreting OFA health testing, a must for every ethical breeder.

If you are wanting to get into dog sports, check out my post on The Wonderful World of Dog Shows! Conformation dog shows are the pillar of the Dog World: The original organized dog sport. Trying to figure out what’s going on at a show is like trying to learn Sindarin Elvish: if you’re not immersed in the Dog World (or Tolkien), you probably have no idea what’s going on.

If you just want a really well behaved pet, check out my series on training puppies, and more to come in the future. I like to say that I run a tight ship in my house, and my dogs are happier for it. Also featured on The Canine Chasm: Rocket and Eevee, my Golden Retrievers. Additional topics include nutrition and lots of mythbusting.
